What do you like about Flinders Quartet?

Katherine Lee (Development and Marketing at FQ) inquired with Faye Goldsmith, a dedicated long-term supporter of our musical work, about her motivations for backing FQ. Faye graciously shared her heartfelt response:

My partner (now deceased) Maggie and I attended the Flinders Quartet concerts from very early days. I met Zoe in the MSO and she was bubbling over with enthusiasm with great plans for the Quartet as they were just about to go to Canada for some ensemble tuition. Various changes in quartet members over the years has served to bring it to its present status of world-class and with a vision quite rare to not only perform “standard“ repertoire but to (for many years) encourage Australian composers to write for them. We have heard very many lovely Quartets. Also to play with different instruments such as the Chinese Erhu, the world class Guitarist, Karin Schaupp, and of course the wonderful Genevieve Lacey and her recorders. And Ben Opie with the wonderful Cor Anglais Quartet of Margaret Sutherland. And the story of refugees through their letters, and the life of composer Shostakovich who lived and worked under a very oppressive regime. The idea of mentoring young student Quartets is so very necessary … the result of which we recently heard when FQ and the Piccolo Quartet joined forces in a truly magnificent rendition of the Mendelssohn String Octet. Friends Zoe, Wilma and Helen are just so lovely to be with and are championing the great cause of Chamber music here in Australia. Bravo - girls!

Love,
