A TALE OF TWO COMPOSERs
Two composers.
Two cities.
One string quartet.
Two Australian composers, currently residing in distant corners of the globe, are poised to embark on a bold and unprecedented project with FQ: "A Tale of Two Composers". Melbourne-based Melody Eötvös and Berlin-based Rishin Singh, have yet to encounter one another, nor have they engaged in any prior dialogue. But we are commissioning them to weave an exceptional musical narrative, relying solely on the language of their music to communicate and co-create a new work.
Thanks to the generous support of those who share our creative dreams, the commission for Rishin is already fully funded through FQ Syndicate #6. However, we still need funds for Melody's work and the production resources to stage their fantastic pieces to come. Your continued support is vital in bringing this collaborative project to fruition. Be a part of the journey as these composers transcend language with music!
Melody Eötvös
Composer Melody Eötvös embraces concepts of flux and narrative through continuous evolution in music. She communicates mystery, adventure, and versatility within deeply sophisticated ideas in musical craft, drawing deeply from human experiences and documented discoveries.
Eötvös is a composer of Contemporary Classical music, both in the realms of traditional instrumental music as well as electro-acoustic sound art. She has lived and studied in Australia, the UK, and the USA, and currently resides in Melbourne, Australia. For a full or partial biography, please see the links below.
Eötvös is currently a Senior Lecturer of Music at the Melbourne Conservaotrium of Music, University of Melbourne, Australia.
Rishin Singh
Rishin Singh (b. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) is a composer/performer living in Berlin.
He has been commissioned to compose for The JACK Quartet (US), Piano+ (US), Claire Edwardes (AUS), DNK Ensemble (NL), Prof. Martin Sturm (DE), The Amsterdam Wandelweiser Festival (NL), and others.
His music and playing appear on records released by Beacon Sound, Edition Wandelweiser Records, Another Timbre, Elsewhere, and others.
Transcending Language Through Music
The hallmark of this project lies in its unique communication method: the two composers will exclusively interact through their music. Beginning with an initial composition from each, they will exchange their pieces and subsequently respond to each other's works through their own musical expressions. This process of musical dialogue will continue, each piece serving as both a statement and a response, guiding the evolution of the collaborative creation. By forgoing verbal or written communication, they embark on a journey where the language of music becomes their sole means of expression and connection, resulting in a truly immersive and innovative artistic endeavor.
As the project unfolds, each piece will bear the unique imprint of its respective composer's style, reflecting their individual artistic sensibilities and experiences. However, woven throughout these compositions will be threads of connection and response, showcasing the interplay between the narratives of Melody Eötvös and Rishin Singh. Through this exchange of musical motifs and ideas, the works will not only stand as standalone creations but also as rich stories of intelligence and creative exchanges shared between the two talented minds, despite their physical separation.
