20th ANNIVERSARY SEASON

Since 2000, Flinders Quartet has been championing the music for string quartet and its continuing development. We’ve met and worked with some incredible people along the way, who have all played a vital role in shaping FQ and its place in Australia’s cultural life. 2020 marks our 20th birthday, a significant milestone and a springboard to a thriving future we look forward to sharing with you. We want to take a moment to say one HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported us, come to our concerts, and loves string quartets as much as we do.

We do hope you enjoy this 20th anniversary brochure as we celebrate some of our favourite moments and projects and look toward exciting times ahead. The quartet will continue to be inspired by the great masterworks of the repertoire, as well as bringing new commissions to life and uncovering hidden gems from the great composers whose voices are yet to be heard.

String quartets are uniquely magical. The form has inspired some of the best music from composers and continues to do so. Thank you for ensuring the future of our special art form through your presence and support. We look forward to saying hello and chatting all things ‘string quartet’ at one of our concerts or events in 2020. There is certainly a lot to choose from!

Thibaud, Wilma, Helen and Zoe

FRANZ SCHUBERT Quartettsatz

DEREK BROOKES String Quartet No. 1 (2018 FQ Composer Development Program participant)

ANTON WEBERN Six Bagatelles for string quartet, Op. 9

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN String Quartet No. 13 in B flat major, Op. 130

“Satisfyingly epic” is the best way to describe Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 130, while Schubert’s singular movement Quartettsatz is a tantalising episode. In this exploration between macro and micro, we interplay scale and form in a thought-provoking and moving curation. On discovering Derek Brookes through our Composer Development Program in 2018, we immediately thought to pair his first string quartet with Webern’s Six Bagatelles. Brookes’ composition is based on stunning haiku text and to accentuate this innovative pairing, we thought to use the fleeting sounds of Webern’s Six Bagatelles as a catalyst for the creation of new haiku poems. We hope you enjoy these wonderful haikus by our talented audience and friends!

GIACOMO PUCCINI Crisantemi

DEBORAH CHEETHAM Bungaree*

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN String Quartet No. 14 in C sharp minor, Op. 131

*World premiere, commissioned by Flinders Quartet with support from Andrew Dixon, in memory of Jean and John Dixon

Deborah Cheetham AO is well known and much-loved as a composer and performer (even more so following the monumental achievement of ‘Eumeralla’ in 2019), but here, we present Cheetham’s new work ‘Bungaree’ for string quartet alongside Beethoven’s Op. 131 as a pairing of great minds and visionaries. Both Cheetham and Beethoven have an innate sense of scale, humanity and the historical significance that art can present. We could not resist programming Puccini’s ‘Crisantemi’ as an homage to Cheetham’s operatic prowess.

Violins Thibaud Pavlovic-Hobba & Wilma Smith
Viola Helen Ireland
