WELCOME TO FLINDERS QUARTET'S 2018 SEASON

The wondrous thing about music is that every time it is played, it changes and regenerates.

In 2018, we are investigating every aspect of Mendelssohn’s music we could squeeze into our series: his string quartets, his songs, and the quintessential A Midsummer Night’s Dream incidental music. We present Mendelssohn’s music with some changed, some regenerated, and as inspiration for new compositions.

If you love string quartets and great music as much as we do, join us for the next adventure.

MUST IT BE?

MUST IT BE? (Muss es sein?)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart String Quartet No. 18 in A major, K.464

Felix Mendelssohn Four lieder arranged for string quartet by John Rotar
Op. 57: No. 5 Venetianisches Gondellied
Op. 34: No. 2 Auf Flügeln des Gesanges
Op. 8: No. 8 Hexenlied
Op. 9: No. 1 Frage

John Rotar V Večernih

Ludwig van Beethoven String Quartet No. 16 in F major, Op. 135

Emerging composer, John Rotar, brought the house down with his piece, V Večernih as part of FQ’s 2016 composer developmentworkshop. Launching the year’s focus on Mendelssohn, FQ has commissioned John to arrange some of Mendelssohn’s songs for string quartet. Included will be Frage, upon which Mendelssohn based his Op. 13 quartet (being performed in Program Three). Immensely talented with a vivacity and clarity in his writing, John Rotar is soon to become a well-known name.

Beethoven’s string quartets are more than a cornerstone of the string quartet canon, and their importance in the musical landscape cannot be understated. His final string quartet, Op. 135 which bears the inscription “Muss es Sein?” acts as an apt bookend to Mozart’s crystalline K.464.

Violins Miki Tsunoda & Nicholas Waters
Viola Helen Ireland
Cello Zoe Knighton

MIDSUMMER MENDELSSOHN GALA

FQ - Baum-5.jpg

MIDSUMMER MENDELSSOHN GALA
with guest artist, Chris Moore (viola and narrator)

Felix Mendelssohn Arrangement of A Midsummer Night’s Dream incidental music by Iain Grandage, intertwined with text from Shakespeare’s play; Chris Moore (narrator)

Calvin Bowman The Curly Pyjama Letters; Chris Moore (narrator)

Johannes Brahms Viola Quintet No. 2 in G major Op. 111; Chris Moore (viola)

William Hennessy once said that all musicians possess a little of the actor within them. FQ takes this one step further, giving Chris Moore the dual role of Puck and violist. (We always knew that if Puck played an instrument, it would be the viola!) Iain Grandage, together with the quartet and Chris, reimagine Mendelssohn’s score with the support of director, Richard Piper, in a concert that will grab the imagination. As a little entrée, Chris will narrate Leunig’s poignant The Curly Pyjama Letters with Calvin Bowman’s accompanying score. Commissioned and premiered by FQ in 2012, its delightful quirkiness has struck a chord with audiences.

Juxtaposing this is the purely romantic, melodic world of Brahms. Described as a man “steeped in force”, Brahms’ G major quintet brings us back to the purity of music with musicianship of the highest order.

It is so satisfying to watch and listen to excellent musicians play music of life and love and movement ... This was a concert about enjoyment of words and music that would have anyone bobbing along, smile twisting the lip.”

IS IT TRUE?

IS IT TRUE? (Ist es wahr?)

Felix Mendelssohn Pieces for String Quartet, Op. 81, No. 2 and 3

Andrew Ford String Quartet No. 6 Jointly commissioned for Flinders Quartet by David and Kaye Birks and Julian Burnside AO QC

Felix Mendelssohn String Quartet Op.13 in A minor

Mendelssohn was fascinated by Beethoven as a teenager and his Op. 13 string quartet draws on inspiration from this great master, as well as his own song Frage which asks the question “Ist es wahr?”. Fast forward to the 21st century Australia and we have Andrew Ford’s sixth string quartet - one movement of which bears the title Sunrise with Wedding Dresses and depicts refugee, Raghda sewing wedding dresses and full of desperate hope for her infant daughter. Pairing Ford and Mendelssohn brings 19th century Berlin right next to 21st century Melbourne. In fact, it does more than that: it reminds us that music represents a time, a place and marks history in the most extraordinarily pertinent way.
