FLINDERS QUARTET 2019

Flinders Quartet was born from a love of the string quartet repertoire and it is this love that has fuelled our creativity for 18 years. Let’s face it, we are pretty lucky to have such great music at our disposal; music that withstands centuries and the inevitable shifting perspective. The excitement of adding to this history with new compositions and representing 21st century Australia through the string quartet canon makes 2019 all about the love of great music. We can’t wait to share it all with you.

PROGRAM 1 - February 2019

FlindersQuartet_photoPiaJohnson_186.jpg

JOSEPH HAYDN String Quartet Op. 64, No. 3
MATTHEW LAING Out of Hibernation (world premiere, commissioned by Flinders Quartet)
ROBERT SCHUMANN
String Quartet No. 3 in A major, Op. 41, No. 3

Matthew Laing was the winner of the Scarlet’s Fund residency award as part of FQ’s 2017 Composer Development Program. Impressed by his unique and engaging concept of sound and gift of musical architecture, we asked Matthew to choose which works best pair with his compositional voice. He chose to have his work programmed with Schumann’s String Quartet No. 3 and Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 64 No. 3; shining a new perspective on these enduring works of the repertoire and using it to place his own work into a historical context.

Violins Thibaud Pavlovic-Hobba Nicholas Waters
Viola Helen Ireland
Cello Zoe Knighton

SHOSTAKOVICH:

through the lens of the string quartet

PROGRAM 2 - July/August 2019

FlindersQuartet_photoPiaJohnson_209.jpg

DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH String Quartet Cycle

Selected movements from the string quartets of Shostakovich, curated by Flinders Quartet with dramaturge, Richard Piper

The collaboration between Flinders Quartet and Richard Piper once again proves fruitful in this bespoke homage to the 20th century Russian.
— Night Writes, July 2019

In a unique concept, we explore Shostakovich’s life through a prism of his string quartets. Inspired by Wendy Lesser’s book “Music for Silenced Voices”, this program will explore the life of Shostakovich through selections from his fifteen string quartets, and follows his relationship with The Beethoven Quartet; his muse for most of his string quartet writing. Be prepared for something a little left of centre.

Violins Thibaud Pavlovic-Hobba Nicholas Waters
Viola Helen Ireland
Cello Zoe Knighton
Dramaturge and narrator Richard Piper

Such was the intensity of the finale that audiences weren’t quite sure how to react when it ended – there was nothing but total silence for a long time before it was broken by thunderous applause... With a mere four instruments that at times sounded like twenty, Flinders Quartet had given the audience an opening into the heart, mind and soul of Shostakovich.

Chinese erhu is brilliantly matched with the European tradition of the string quartet and recorder in our final concert for the season. While separated by geography and history, the musical colours of contemporary Chinese sensation, Zhao Zhang and Debussy’s works illustrate the way music is able to unite cultures. Both quintessentially nationalistic in their own ways, the similarities between the two works on this program are far more striking than their differences.

“Translations” more than proves the cliché that music is a universal language. This concert places a focus on using the music of the string quartet as a shared language between East and West.

Viola Tom Higham
Cello Zoe Knighton
